Our stay at Club Med La Pointe aux Canonniers

By Club Med G.M Elise Spilkin

Mauritius: an island of coconuts, crystal blue waters, white sand beaches, and palm trees. It’s where your days are spent searching for shells and tropical fish, and evenings are spent dancing along to the beautiful sounds of French Creole music.

My husband, 2-year-old daughter, and I stayed at the newly refurbished Club Med La Pointe aux Canonniers for a week in March. I found it to be a family-friendly resort that gives parents a chance to relax while their kids experience the best that Mauritius has to offer.

Departing Johannesburg for the picturesque island of Mauritius is an efficient 4-hour flight. Before you know it, you’ve arrived in paradise! Upon arrival, the staff at the village (this is what Club Med calls its resorts) greeted us with singing and flower garlands, after which we found our rooms and hit-the-sack for the night. We couldn’t wait to begin our heavenly holiday the next morning!

We woke to a blazing hot summer’s day, ready to tackle the breakfast buffet and a long day on the spectacular beach.  We took our daughter Stella to the Kid’s Club for the day, which is perfectly suited to entertaining the little ones should the grown ups want to spend the day sipping cocktails on a sun lounger without the worry of keeping them busy. Closing at 9pm, you can rest assured that your precious little ones will have a wonderful time…for the whole day!

On the second day we decided to take Stella to the beach with us. She ran into the sea, and we knew that we could rely on nature’s beauty to keep her entertained while we kept a watchful eye on from under our umbrella. A special touch that Club Med offers is an 11am fruit platter where the friendly staff (or G.Os, as Club Med calls them) at the village stroll along the beach with trays of fruit for the G.Ms (Club Med guests). This is much appreciated after a morning in the sea.

That evening, we were treated to that evening’s entertainment of Creole dancing and singing near the pool area. The bar is open, of course, and the mood is buzzing with excitement.

There is something so endearing about not having to leave the Club Med village for anything at all. It means that you can truly “switch off” from the outside world and its commitments, and enjoy the present moment. No planning needs to be made, no taxis booked, and no currency exchanged. You can simply commit yourself to living the island lifestyle for an entire week! That’s exactly what we did.
