In our July 2019 edition of a Club Med golfing holiday, we explored South Africans’ passion for golf and travel. We looked at the different ways a golfing holiday could be planned, enjoyed, and how the gorgeous island of Mauritius is a golfing paradise. We also discussed the benefits of getting to Mauritius with Club Med’s partner Air Mauritius (which includes the fact that your golf clubs fly free of charge).
For part 2, we take a closer look at golf in Mauritius and focus on two of the many courses the island has to offer.
Known for its lush surroundings and special mix of mountains, forest, and white sandy beaches, Mauritius is ideal for a sun getaway.
Golf is becoming more and more popular on the island and two of the best courses aren’t too far from our Club Med La Plantation d’Albion village (or resort).
Tamarina Golf Club
Just 20-minutes from our Club Med La Plantation d’Albion village, lives the 18-hole, championship course (par 72) known as Tamarina Golf Club.
The course was designed by golf architect Rodney Wright, who is known for having a passion for integrating the culture and environment of the surrounding area into a course.
From a golfer’s experience, the course offers breathtaking views of Rempart Mountain and Tamarin Bay. This is coupled with a technical challenge for all golfers as each hole offers five different tees: professional, competition, member, senior, and ladies.
Your round is made even better by the fantastic facilities of the course which include its panoramic driving range. The range features ten undercover bays with natural grass practice tees and greens. Make sure you experience it before your round – it was built to PGA standards and well worth a visit.
Mont Choisy Le Golf
Located 50-minutes from our Club Med La Plantation d’Albion resort, Mont Choisy Le Golf is the only 18-hole golf course in the northern part of the island.
Since it was officially opened by Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth in 2017 the course has grown to be one of the most popular on the island. It was designed by Zimbabwean golf architect and former professional, Peter Matkovich. Matkovich’s designs are inspired by the natural elements surrounding a course and this has influenced his designs of courses in Mauritius, South Africa, and others around the world. He also designed both of the Heritage golf courses in Mauritius one of which he co-designed with fellow golfer Louis Oosthuizen.
What makes the Mont Choisy course unique is its Mauritian landscaping with the distinct Mauritian black volcanic rock “outcrops”.
Not only does the course offer a challenge for the world’s best golfers, but it also delivers fun and a world-class golfing experience for golfers of different levels. Its intention is to provide options on how to approach each hole and its visitors always leave having accomplished something on a dream course!
Look out for the signature 15th hole; a short par three that requires an approach shot over a wetland onto an island green framed by a tall stone chimney which is part of the agricultural history of Mont Choisy.
