Learn a new skill

Holidays give us the opportunity to relax and to spend time doing things we do not always make time for in the busyness of life, work, and school.

On a holiday we have the opportunity to spend quality time with those we love, read books we’ve been wanting to read, relax, explore new surroundings, and more. We also have the opportunity – and time – to learn a new skill.

A number of medical practitioners have promoted the benefits of exercise for our mental, physical, and emotional health. When many of us think of a holiday we think of relaxing; we don’t think of spending our days trying to master any skill. What if we were to learn this skill in a wonderful, new environment in a way that is fun with an expert to teach us?

On a Club Med holiday, you can learn archery, trapeze, or skiing while in incredible surroundings on an all-inclusive holiday. Take advantage of unlimited lessons to learn either one or all of these, at your own pace and as your relaxation schedule allows.

Skiing

In January 2018, TIME published an article by Markham Heid on the benefits of skiing. In the article Dr Josef Niebauer – a professor of sports medicine and cardiology and director of the Institute for Molecular Sports and Rehabilitation Medicine at Paracelsus Medical University in Salzburg, Austria – is quoted as saying:

“Alpine skiing is a mix of endurance and resistance training…It has positive effects on the heart and circulation, as well as peripheral muscles—predominately the legs.”

Dr Niebauer’s research has shown him that downhill and cross country skiing offer benefits such as:

  • improved insulin resistance,
  • improved body composition and glucose metabolism,
  • a drop in blood pressure, blood lipids and heart rate, and
  • reinvigorated blood vessels and cell health.

Other benefits of skiing include the range of muscles you can target in a single session, the fact that it resembles interval training with bursts of high energy followed by short breaks while making your way back up the slope, and it can improve balance and range of motion.

Heid writes:

“Lots of research suggests that spending time outdoors and in nature is great for your mental and physical health. And a little cold exposure could also provide fat-burning benefits.”

Research is one thing; experience is another. On a holiday with Club Med, you can learn to ski at an incredible all-inclusive Alpine resort with a ski pro and decide for yourself on the benefits of skiing.  We have a number of resorts in the Alps so you can test the theory over and over again.

Choose from one of our fantastic resorts to experience the benefits of Alpine skiing, as outlined by Dr Niebauer.
