Winter Whip. Winter Yay Yay!

To hear about South Africans getting excited about winter is strange in its own right. But to hear that people are actually getting excited for a slopestyle event hosted by a South African magazine IN Africa is even harder to believe. Or is it?

Africa’s Only Slopestyle Event

LW Mag puts together this adrenaline pumping event every year, and each year it just keeps getting better! The #XperiaWinterWhip 2016 Snowboard and Ski Jam took place at Afriski Mountain Resort in Lesotho on 6 August 2016 at the Mahlasela pass, 3050m above sea level. It aims to showcase winter sports in Africa, and serves as a training ground for professional skiers and local holiday-makers, and is the highest place that anyone can train, and still consider themselves in Southern Africa. Not only did snowboarders and skiers from all over South Africa and Lesotho join in the slopestyle competition, but competitors from the US and Canada joined too this year.

Snow Jokes!

Club Med, was very proud to be the main prize sponsor for the second year running. Both Pro Men’s and Open Men’s division winners won an all inclusive ski holiday for two to Val Thorens in the French Alps.

Most of the time, the snow in Lesotho is very unpredictable and of course not as vast as the snow on the French Alps of course. The abundant snowfall the week of #XperiaWinterWhip 2016 transformed the usually anticipated strip of snow in the Maluti mountains into a European wonderland and allowed for the biggest Winter Whip slopestyle park to be built to date. Believe it! For those who love the snow, it’s possibly the best year yet. Skiers get to hone their skills in the high altitude at Afriski in August and then set course for longer runs in the European winter at the end of the year. Usually, visitors use this guide to see which resort is perfect for their dream ski holiday.

Tough Competition

Entrants to both the snowboarding and ski divisions have increased immensely since the inception of the #XperiaWinterWhip  event. This year was no different. Fierce competition and progressive riding from all the competitors made it hard to choose winners. Here is a list of the #XperiaWinterWhip winners for 2016.
